Extreme Tool Setting

Carmex designed its new Multi-Function Milling Tool (MF) for a wide array of milling applications including spotting and drilling, side milling, chamfering, slotting, grooving and engraving. The company says the tool delivers versatility and superior cutting performance at a high value. The tool’s construction from an ultra-fine carbide grade enhances stability and wear resistance, Cemented Carbide Inserts while also featuring a new generation of PVD coating for higher performance.

The company says the MF Milling Tool performs multiple operations with one tool, eliminates tool changes, reduces programming and setup times and reduces tool inventories. It especially recommends the tool for machines with a limited number of tool stations.

“Carmex’s deep hole drilling inserts years of experience in the development of the industry’s most sophisticated high-precision tooling has resulted in a milling tool design that delivers high precision and improved finish over longer tool life,” says Jim White, national sales manager for Carmex USA. “The Six-in-One MF Milling Tool is another example of the way Carmex provides value-added solutions to our customers.”

Considerations for a New CNC Machine

NT Tool offers its high-accuracy hydraulic chucks in a slim PHC-S toolholder for use in tight spaces. The PHC-S holder provides the stability and precision of NT’s dual clamping-point system with Carbide Inserts access into narrow workpieces previously only possible with shrink-fit holders. The PHC-S is available in HSK, CAT (standard and two-face contact), BT (standard and two-face contact) and UTS shank styles. They are offered in inch sizes ranging from ¼" to 1" in diameter and metric sizes ranging from 6 to 25 mm in diameter. Custom sizes are also available.

The oil chamber around the chucking sleeve absorbs cutting vibrations, which allows for consistently higher accuracy and a smoother work surface compared to shrink-fit holders, says the company. The PHC-S model is said to provide accuracy down to 3 microns. An electromagnetic rustproof coating ensures that this accuracy is maintained throughout the life of the holder.

Setup requires only a one-handed hex wrench to clamp the cutting tool. This design reduces downtime shoulder milling cutters and eliminates the risk of burn injuries associated with shrink-fit chucking for tight-space applications.

How Lowering Torque Improves Tapping Tool Life

Tsugami America, the exclusive North American importer of Precision Tsugami Machine Tools,Cemented Carbide Inserts showcases the Tsugami BW129Z in booth 5263 at Eastec 2023.

The BW129Z Swiss-type independent-gang slide lathe is a chucker-convertible, high-performance machine tool with a FANUC 31i-B control.

The BW129Z uses its three-path control system and dual independent-gang slides to reduce cycle time and produce complex parts quickly. Multiple driven tools on the main and sub spindle, Cermet Inserts combined with front and rear sliding tool posts, are designed to enable multiple simultaneous and/or overlapping Swiss turning operations.

According to the company, cycle times are dramatically reduced by simultaneous rough and finish OD turning (pinch or balanced turning). With Tsugami’s cross-rotary tools on the same centerline, pinch milling or drilling is also available. The front and rear tool posts also enable users to have three tools in the cut to perform overlapping machining, independent back side machining, simultaneous end-milling and balanced turning.

The BW129Z comes standard with nine linear cutting axes (X1, Y1, Z1, X2, Y2, Z2, X3, Y3 and Z3), as well as with Tsugami’s Abile Programming Software.

Tool Identification System Transfers Data Via RFID Tags

Seco Tools has opened a new production unit (PU) in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico that will house special tool manufacturing. This strategic move will enable Seco Tools to consolidate its presence in the Mexican market. Located in the 360 Industrial Park, the new PU has direct access to industrial cities in the North (Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros and Reynosa) and the South (San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Querétaro).

The new 2,500-square-meter manufacturing facility features Seco Tools’ unique architecture, design and production cell layout standards. Additionally, PU employees will have exclusive training and education spaces with multifunctional rooms for strategic, commercial and administrative activities.

Following the acquisition of the cutting tools division tungsten carbide inserts of Quimmco Technological Center, the machinery and equipment from the previous facility will now be transferred, occupying approximately two-thirds of the PU floor. New equipment for standard tool production is expected to come soon and fill the remainder of the space.

Seco Tools plans to continue its focus on sustainability with this new location, which will feature solar cells on the plant roof and on the top of car ports to generate up to 50% of the power needs of the PU.

Oksana Wade, CFO at Seco Tools, says, “In Mexico, Seco Tools is not only selling new tools, but also regrinding and remanufacturing carbide and PCD tools, as well as recycling carbide at the end of the tool life. [When] taking care of the whole tool lifecycle, the customer wins and the environment wins too.”

According to Seco Tools, this new PU is an example of the company’s commitment to the Mexican market, and it is strategically positioned to serve the growing demand for carbide and diamond tools in Mexico, North America and some countries surface milling cutters in South America and Europe.

High RPM Spindles: 5 Advantages for 5 axis CNC Machines

CNC vendor NUM offers a ready-integrated tool head for plasma, laser and waterjet cutting applications as well as a 3D simulation package that combines workpiece simulation with collision monitoring.

The head is designed with the versatility of movement and stiffness required to implement precision cutting motion. The APKT Insert lightweight head can be assembled easily on existing CNC machines in plasma- and waterjet-cutting operations, often without additional mechanical adaptation, the company says. This extends the capability of machinery from 2D to 3D applications, with precise, multi-axis interpolation.

The company also offers a 3D simulation package that combines workpiece simulation with collision monitoring and other features. Designated True 3D, the software tool is a general-purpose version of the company’s 3D simulator for multi-axis grinding applications. The tool not only emulates, but it simulates the actual CNC commands, and subsequently provides an output as close as possible to the actual machined parts. It allows users to virtually prototype and optimize the entire machining process, improving machine productivity, reducing tool wear and VNMG Insert completing projects faster.
